Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork that forms part of the extensive defensive frontier constructed during the reign of King Offa of Mercia in the late eighth century. This particular section, measuring approximately 800 metres in length and extending south-eastward from the county boundary towards the River Unk, represents a significant surviving stretch of the monument which originally extended for some 150 miles along the Anglo-Welsh border. The dyke comprises a substantial bank, in places accompanied by a ditch, constructed to demarcate territorial authority and control movement across the border region. The earthwork's monumental scale and consistent engineering throughout its length demonstrate the considerable resources and organisational capacity required for its construction under royal direction.
