Ballangrew is a moated homestead located approximately 750 metres east-north-east of Ballangrew in Perthshire, Scotland. The site consists of a substantial rectangular moat enclosing an area of raised ground, characteristic of medieval defensive domestic settlements of the twelfth to sixteenth centuries. Moated homesteads of this type were constructed by landowners of modest status seeking to protect their residences and demesnes through water-based defences, combining practical security with a visual demonstration of territorial authority. The survival of the moat as an earthwork feature indicates the site's abandonment before modern agricultural intensification, preserving evidence of medieval settlement patterns in rural Perthshire.
